What are you matching: the lipstick or its outer case?
A refill can include the lipstick and its inner cartridge, while the decorative outer case is retained. The replacement must suit that case system. A similar-looking bullet, matching shade name or familiar brand does not by itself identify the retaining arrangement.
| Record | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|
| Outer case | Exact range, version and any useful identifying information |
| Refill cartridge | Full product name and the replacement sold for that system |
| Compatibility statement | The manufacturer’s named pairing or a specific support reply |
Use a clear outside photograph and the original product reference if available. A batch reference or barcode can help identify an item; neither is a universal mechanical compatibility code.
Can refills from the same brand still be incompatible?
A brand can change its system between generations. Guerlain’s US Le Marbre Rouge G case page states that the new cases work only with the new-generation refills, and the restriction also applies in reverse. The brand name alone therefore does not settle an older-case purchase.
That statement was checked on November 4, 2026. It is an example of a generation limit, not a method for dating your own case from its metal color. If your version is unclear, ask Guerlain to identify it before selecting a refill or trying to force the mechanism.

When does changing the shade stay within a named system?
Shade changes can be supported within a specified family. Charlotte Tilbury’s US Hot Lips 2 refill page identifies the collectible Hot Lips 2 case designs as its intended partners. Its broader refill guide also describes shade swapping within that named collection.
Keep the family name with that permission. The use of a familiar formula name, or the appearance of refillable products elsewhere in the brand, does not extend the statement to every case it has sold. Check the actual product page rather than substituting an old shopping roundup.
Does a cross-brand swap reported online establish compatibility?
A reported fit is evidence of what that person tried, with the items they had. It is not a manufacturer’s statement about your case, its generation or how the closure will behave. Read whether the report describes secure retention, an imperfect fit or a modification instead of stopping at the word fits.
Ask about the precise pairing when official guidance is absent. Do not trim a cartridge, glue it into a case or heat the lipstick as a compatibility test. Leave an unconfirmed pairing unconfirmed; a visual resemblance cannot resolve the mechanism.
What should you check if the refill has already arrived?
Compare the delivered product name and version with the pairing you intended to buy before installation. Keep its packaging and the order description available. Follow the directions for that exact system; resistance is a reason to stop and clarify the match, rather than add force.
If the pairing was described as compatible but does not work as instructed, send the seller or maker the case identity, refill identity and a description of the step that failed. A support question is separate from any return decision. Do not assume an opened or modified item has the same return conditions.
Does keeping the case renew the lipstick’s use history?
The case record and the cosmetic’s history are different records. Retain the new refill’s label, any opening information and its storage instructions. Reusing a case does not establish the condition of an older cartridge, or supply a new date for its contents.
The FDA explains that cosmetic shelf life varies with product type, use and storage. Our label-first replacement guide keeps those questions separate. For the outer package, follow its own care instructions; the makeup-bag cleaning method is not a recipe for soaking a lipstick mechanism.
How can this make a small kit easier to manage?
Keep one clearly identified, usable combination ready and store any spare refill as directed. A part waiting for its matching case is not a ready lipstick. The low-maintenance routine can remain simple without collecting unverified replacements.
Keep the official pairing information with the record for your case. That small step makes a later shade choice easier to check, while leaving product condition, care and the exact compatibility decision visible.

Which part of the match is still unknown?
I know the brand, but not the case range
Find the full case identity or ask the maker to identify it. Do not select a cartridge from the brand name alone.
I know the range, but the generation is unclear
Ask which version of the case you have and which refill generation it accepts. Keep a missing answer open.
Both items are named, but no pairing is stated
Send both references to the manufacturer. A similar shape or user report is a question to clarify, not a confirmed match.
Choose the record for the stage you are at
Before buying a replacement
Save the named case/refill pairing and compare it with the exact listing you intend to order.
The delivered refill does not fit as instructed
Retain both identities and packaging. Describe the step that failed before altering or forcing the mechanism.
A refill is waiting in the kit
Keep its own label and storage directions. Mark a part awaiting a compatible case as unavailable, rather than a ready product.
Questions people ask
Are lipstick refills universal?
Use the case systems named by the maker. A similar shape or the word refillable does not establish that different cartridges and cases are compatible.
Does buying the same brand guarantee a match?
A brand may have different ranges or generations. Guerlain’s new Rouge G case page gives an explicit generation restriction; check your actual version.
Can you change shades in a refillable case?
When the maker supports that change within the named system. Keep the exact family and version with the permission rather than extending it to the whole brand.
What if a forum says another brand fits?
Check the exact items, version and any modification described. A user’s experiment does not establish manufacturer support for your pairing.
Should you force a refill that will not seat?
Follow the exact installation instructions and stop if the result is wrong. Retain identities and packaging, and ask the seller or maker before changing the parts.
Does a new case reset an old refill’s age?
Case replacement does not renew the cosmetic’s opening or storage history. Follow the refill’s label and keep its own record.
