Why the first 72 hours matter
A spray or self-tan is still developing for the first hours, and the top layer of skin is still settling. Anything that strips or softens that layer during this time shortens the result. Water, friction and heat are the three main factors, and they are all easy to limit.
The routine
Wait the full development time before showering, usually four to eight hours. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, non-foaming cleanser with no exfoliant. Pat dry instead of rubbing. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser twice a day, and keep it off the most heavily tanned areas for the first hour so it does not disturb the colour.

What to avoid
Avoid hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms for the first two days, because heat speeds up the shedding of the outer skin. Skip swimming in chlorinated pools. Keep tight clothing from rubbing the same spots, which creates lines of lighter colour.
Fading evenly
Once the first three days are over, exfoliate gently once or twice a week with a soft mitt and keep the skin moisturised. Reapply a maintenance self-tan every few days if you want the colour to stay even, rather than waiting until it has faded.

Questions people ask
Can I wear makeup on a fresh tan?
Yes, but choose a non-comedogenic product and wait until the colour has developed before applying anything heavy near the face.
When can I use a retinoid after tanning?
Wait until the colour has settled, usually a few days, then patch test. Retinoids can increase sensitivity, so use sunscreen.
